VIRUSES HAVE HELPED RUSSIAN TOMATO AND PEPPER MANUFACTURERS

In December, the Rosselkhoznadzor imposed a ban on the supply of tomatoes and pepper from a number of regions of Armenia, Uzbekistan and Turkey due to the detection of viruses dangerous to vegetable production. So in Uzbek tomatoes, a virus of brown wrinkling of tomato fruits was revealed, which threatens to lose up to 70% of the crop. And in tomatoes from Turkey, specialists from Rosselkhoznadzor detected viruses from the mosaic of pepino, South American tomato moth and spotted wilting of tomatoes. In addition, apples with tomatoes from Azerbaijan were banned from import into the Russian Federation in connection with the identification of South American tomato moth and eastern fruit in them.

In the Fruit and Vegetable Union, the measures of the Rosselkhoznadzor to combat quarantine pests and diseases are supported, noting that phytosanitary safety is one of the most important factors to prevent a decrease in the production of cucumbers and tomatoes in protected soil, the development of which in recent years investors have invested more than 250 billion rubles. In addition, this ban on the import of tomatoes and pepper will help domestic producers to quickly overcome the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has greatly affected greenhouse farms. Moreover, in the Russian Federation it is greenhouse farms that mainly produce tomatoes and peppers for the domestic market.
